JAPFA Won Asia Responsible Enterprise Award 2019

10 June 2019

We are proud to announce that Japfa Comfeed Indonesia’s Social Investement team has for a second time since 2017 won the Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards (AREA 2019) held in Taipei on May 24th.

Competing with over 200 corporate led initiatives from sixteen Asian countries, Japfa Comfeed Indonesia won two out of six award categories for Social Empowerment and Health Promotion.

AREA’s 2019 panel of judges is led by Dr. Eugene Chien, Ambassador-at-Large of Taiwan. Each corporate submission goes through a rigorous evaluation period of three months based on effectiveness, relevance, impact and sustainability.

In the Social Empowerment category; the judges were won over by the JAPFA SiRepi (Resik Nguripi) community project. This is a new initiative launched in 2018 by our Social Investment team jointly with one of our local business units in Sragen Regency, Indonesia. The concept was to help local communities reduce the impact of household rubbish by recycling or exchanging waste for profit. To set up the project, members of the Japfa project team had to first educate local communities on the environment, how to classify and separate waste items and finally, what type of waste can be re-cycled for profit. Once public awareness has been established, the team set up a membership-based transaction structure called the “JAPFA Waste Bank SiRepi” where people could sign up as clients and exchange waste for cash. Today, our Social Investment team continues to provide active mentoring on the operation of the “Waste Bank” and help manage transaction flow in an efficient and transparent manner.

Winning our second Health Promotion award at AREA 2019 is especially gratifying. Since launching our flagship JAPFA for Kids in 2008; we continue to grow and sustain how we impact Indonesia’s rural children through program innovation. In 2017 we introduced the role of Healthy Food Ambassador in rural schools. Our Social Investment team together with participating schools would select pupils as role models for healthy nutrition. These young ambassadors were given intensive training in nutritional science, how to participate in the farm-to-fork production cycle and how to inculcate daily habits related to health and hygiene. Every day, our Healthy Food Ambassadors continue to play a pivotal role in helping rural children adopt essential healthy routines such as hand washing with soap, choosing healthy food over junk food and the importance of water sanitation etc. This peer led initiative has been a success in spreading the change in personal well-being from the classroom to homes and villages.
