Aiming at Meat Self-Sufficiency JAPFA Breed F1 Nelore Cattle in Indonesia
In order to support government to achieve meat self-sufficiency, PT Japfa Comfeed Indonesia Tbk (JAPFA) through its subsidiary, PT Santosa Agrindo (Santori) for the first time in Indonesia breed American-Brazilian cattle, namely F1 Nelore. At the first stage, Santori imported 5000 pcs Nelore semen that already cross-bred with ex-import cattle namely Brahman Cross in 2017 and the result was very satisfying.
As we already know, food problem is government number one priority. It’s been a long time they targeting meat self-sufficiency through revamping upstream and downstream operation by increasing production and brood stock population.
Safuan Kasno, Head of Cattle Fattening PT Santosa Agrindo said, “In our Feedlot, we keep conducting research and development on how to push forward cattle breed industry to produce new type of cattle that productive, healthy, and certainly can support government effort to achieve meat self-sufficiency. With F1 Nelore cattle, we are very optimist if local breeder actively breeds it, then without a doubt meat self-sufficiency is very possible to achieve.”
Not only can withstand Indonesia tropical climate, F1 Nelore cattle have a lot of other excellence, these cattle proven to have a high reproductive success ratio, it has a great motherly instinct to taking care it calves, and also have high resistance to disease and parasite. Compared to other type of commonly breed cattle in Indonesia, F1 Nelore possess 35% larger bone posture, it means it produce more meat.
Miselan, Santori's F1 Nelore Breeder Partner, said “I've already breed F1 Nelore at my farm, I can see a significant increase in Average Daily Gain (ADG). F1 Nelore can reach ADG 1,3 kg, compared to other type of cattle we breed before who can only reach ADG 0,6 kg, it means it’s very profitable for breeder. F1 Nelore that we bred can reach 600 kg in just 18 months, which is very good for business”.
With the entry of F1 Nelore seed in Indonesia, JAPFA entice all it breeder partner to actively participate in supporting government to achieve meat-self-sufficiency by breeding F1 Nelore cattle, especially in East Java as one of local cattle barn (Peranakan Onglo/PO) in Indonesia. Hopefully breeding of F1 Nelore cattle in East Java can encourage the public to get to know this type of cow which is the forerunner to PO cows. To prove this commitment, Santori will import another 10.000 Nelore semen in December.
“Government are not the only one who responsible to achieve meat self-sufficiency, we as private company should take part of it. We hope, with all partner taking part to breed F1 Nelore, it can help increase national cattle production to ensure public animal protein consummation,” said Safuan.
